28 Days Later

So I went and saw the movie 28 Days Later last night. The reviewer from the Daily Mail said it was “Scary as Hell.” I don’t know if I agree with that. It did have some tense moments, I did jump maybe once. I coverd my eyes and turned away often. It was quite gorey. But as horror movies go these days, I’m just not feeling properly scared or terrified. The movie’s premise is that three PETA types break into a lab to try and liberate the chimps that are being experimented on. The scientist type walks in on them and tells them “no, you can’t let them out, they are infected” and the kids are like…”huh? infected with what?” and the scientist says “infected with RAGE!” So naturally the kids scoff at this and open the cage anyway. The chimp, as we just know is going to happen, goes into a rage and bites the stupid girl and then she gets INSTANTLY infected and starts tearing at the others in an incredibly gruesome and disturbing scene.

Fade to black…then on the screen we see “28 Days Later” and there’s a naked man in a hospital bed with wires and tubes all over. He wakes up with a start tries to get out of bed, the IV stand falls on him…he rips all the tubes out of his arms tries to leave…but the door is locked and no one is around. By the way, we also don’t hear the beeping of a heart monitor as you’d suspect from someone in a hospital bed. Well, he finds a key on the floor…and it opens his door. the hospital is in disarray…gurneys are knocked over, chairs are on the floor….but it’s deserted. The guy keeps calling out saying hello but there’s no answer. He goes outside…there is no one around (I think he was in London).

Finally he finds a church, he climbs the stairs inside…and in the chapel is a pile of dead bodies. He looks around, then shouts “HELLO?” and two of the dead bodies sits up, then to his right behind a door, there’s all this pounding and moaning. The door opens and there’s a priest acting all weird…as he gets closer we see his eyes are red (like the iris of his eye is red, not like his eyes are bloodshot) he’s acting crazy and trying to attack hospital guy. Hospital guy has a plastic bag filled with cans of pop and he hits the priest to make him back off. The priest falls but is alive and growling at dude… Dude does run away…and this is when the wackyness of the movie ensues…

As in all horror movies, Dude finds out what happened to everyone, meets up with some people who save his sorry ass and then the adventure through Zombie Land begins. The adventure is typical, they have the usual cheap scare (it’s all quiet, the hero looks around for the badguy…BAM! some loud noise…it’s a rat – you know, cheap scare).

My friend was bored with the movie…I was excited while it was going on, but on reflection…it didn’t move me…much less scare me. The music was cool, this was done by the same guy who did Trainspotting. So you kind of expect some good music from him.

But I was hoping for a scarier movie. Scary movies just aren’t that scary anymore.

I’d say this is OK if you wait for the $1 show. I think the dark theater and big screen will help in the enjoyment of the movie….at least better than on TV at home.
