So this is the kind of thing you miss when you sleep on the train<\/p>\n

See that orange blob? That is the feathery top of the Halloween Themed pen the girl in the seat in front of me was using. That’s my covert attempt to get a good picture of it.<\/p>\n
I was deeply distracted by the violent thrashing of the top of her pen. I couldn’t fall asleep, which seems to have become my morning ritual. As Courtney Love screamed in my head, I plotted how to mock her and what she was writing with that feathered pen. But as the ride went on and the top of her pen wiggled and shoook and then Edyie Gorme began to sing in my head… the pen reminded me of a similar writing instrument my little sister had. It was a Day-Glo pen with troll doll hair on the top. She was in Jr High at the time, and then it got me thinking of Jr High. At that age it felt like you’d be in school forever and the opinions of others were so important. If my feathered pen was cool to me on Saturday when I found it, by Monday if “Jamie” didn’t say it was cool I’d have to throw it away. I remember begging my mother to PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let me get jeans for school because I just couldn’t stand another day of being teased for wearing the yellow polyester pants. Fitting in was so important, more important than passing the Science test.<\/p>\n
But now if “Jamie” told me my pen was stupid, I’d tell her to shove it up her ass. I can happily wear my man-shoes and not suffer the torment of pre-teen girls. The opinions others have of me mean nothing. I couldn’t care less if you don’t like my shoes, purse or hairstyle. <\/p>\n
Weird how what was once the center of your world can become nothing, just a passing thought dredged up by a fluttering pen in front of you on the train.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
