Apparently the NFL is worried about the “risque” creative on the ads. I don’t care one way or the other watching couples discuss getting in the mood or watching them embrace. Most ads don’t bother me as being too risque. However, last night, after I flipped to Masterpiece Theater on WYIN – the Gary, IN PBS channel I saw some extremely disturbing advertising.
After an ad for a hospital, I saw an ad for a local funeral home. Then, sandwiching a NIPSCO ad, were two more for other funereal businesses. The last one for something like, Calumet Funeral Home, ended their ad with, “We can’t wait to serve you”

They can’t wait to serve me? Don’t they understand how that translates?

“We can’t wait to serve you” becomes:

Retail store – “We can’t wait for you to come give us your money”

Restaurant – “We can’t wait for you to come give us your money”

Hospital – “We can’t wait for you to get hurt/sick so you can give us your money”

Funeral Home – “We can’t wait for you or one of your loved ones to die so you can give us your money”

It’s like the people doing the advertising for these guys don’t realize what they’re saying. Don’t hire Wal-Mart’s ad agency to do your commercial for your funeral home.

In my search to find the exact name of the Calumet funeral place I found this place check out the title on your window when you go there, it says, “Welcome to Calumet Park Cemetery!” Should ANY cemetery ever have exclamation points? Are we supposed to be excited that we’re there, looking at the cemetery’s website. I just don’t get “exclamtion-pointy” when thinking about cemeterys or their websites. It is more an exclamation point of shock and terror, than one of excitement.

It’s so disturbing and it feels completely disrespectful. Funeral homes should only advertise in the yellow pages and in the newspaper near the obituaries, there should be no radio or television advertising allowed. It needs to be low key and under the radar, there when you need it, but unobtrusive when you don’t.

They need to realize that the majority of Americans are living in denial that they or the people around them are going to die. As Americans we don’t want death and its trappings shoved in our faces and we certainly don’t want it brought into our living rooms in the form of ads on our televisions.

The NFL is worried about being too risque with ED drugs, the Desperate Housewives in towels, all the sexy beer girls running around and Janet Jackson and her pasties. I think the critics and the honchos at the NFL should sit down and watch these PBS funeral ads, then they’ll realize what is really disturbing.

Yes, I’d rather have the NFL bring sex and drugs into my living room than funeral homes. Especially funeral homes who “can’t wait” to serve me.

What do you find inappropriate?
